Susan, my best friend
My best friend is Susan. She lives in Barcelona with her husband and her children. She doesn’t work. Her husband has a very good business. He is a software engineer and has a company that sells computer games all over the world.
They have two children, a girl and a boy. The girl is eight and the boy is nine.
They live in a big house by the sea. I usually visit them in the summer.
They have a sailing boat and we usually go sailing with some other friends.
We sunbathe and enjoy diving and swimming in the deep sea. We usually take some wine and cheese on board with us. We sit to watch the sunset while we drink, eat and tell stories about our youth.
Meanwhile our children and husbands like to play in the water. Linda, my daughter, usually asks me:
-‘Why don’t you play with us?’
-‘Okay’ I reply ‘but only if you don’t shoot me with your water pistols’.
They do it anyway and then, they laugh a lot when I protest.
I love to visit Susan and her family in the summer, they are really nice people and I always have a great time. Imprimir

Title: What is this?
Phil comes home after work, he opens the door and everything is dark.
He turns on the light and cries:
-Hello, I’m home!
But nobody answers.
-Where is everybody? He asks.
Then he sees a package on the dining table and says:
-What is this?
Music starts playing. He immediately recognises the tune, it’s his favourite song.
-Who is playing that music? He asks as he goes to see the iPod that is lying on the table. But the music is not coming from the iPod.
-How is this possible? Where is everybody?
Then he thinks he must call his wife. He starts looking for his mobile phone but he can’t find it.
-Where is my mobile phone?- He asks
-And whose package is this?- He adds taking the package in his hands and trying to guess its content.
As he starts getting really nervous, all the lights of the house suddenly turn on.
His wife, Rita, comes down the stairs holding a big cake in her hands. At the same time, a lot of people appear in the dining room. They are his family and close friends.
His wife says: Happy birthday, Phil! And all the guests start singing “happy birthday to you.”
Phil is very surprised and he asks:
- How come I didn’t have a clue? When did you organise this surprise party?
His son Jim says:
- A long time ago, Dad, when you went to Paris. Please, open your present that is on the table. We hope you like it.
Phil opens the present. It’s an iPad! He is now very happy.

In the picture they can see Betty’s family in their last family reunion. It’s a very big family. There are about 30 people.
Carla starts asking her mother:
-Who is this?
-This is uncle Robert.
-What does he do?
-He is a lawyer.
-And this? Who is this?
-That’s his wife, Margaret. She’s a journalist.
-And, who is this?
-This is Jeff. He is my cousin and he is a doctor. Well, actually he’s a surgeon.
-What does a surgeon do?- Asks Carla
-A surgeon operates on patients in a Hospital- replies her mother.
-Is his wife a nurse?- asks Carla
-No, his wife, Sonia, is a painter.
-And he? Is he a cook?
- No, he isn’t a cook. He’s a hairdresser.
- Why is he wearing an apron then?
- Because he cooked for us at the family reunion.
- Is aunt Dorothy an engineer?
- Yes, she is. She works for a big IT company.
- Why aren’t you an engineer too?
- Because I prefer to be a mom and a teacher.
- And Doro? What does Doro do?
- Doro? Doro is Bertha’s dog. Well, he is a toastmaster.
- A toastmaster? Asks Carla
- Yes, because he keeps everybody happy. A toastmaster is someone who is in charge of organising an event like a family reunion, party or wedding. His job is to keep everyone happy. And Doro is very good at making everyone laugh, especially when he plays with the ball.
Hahaha. They both laughed looking at Doro’s picture.

Andrei is a Russian who is going to do a masters degree in sciences at a University in the United States.
He is at a welcome party at the University. The place is a nice old mansion surrounded by a beautiful garden. It’s late August so the weather is lovely and warm. All the students and professors are in the garden, chatting, eating and drinking. Andrei is a bit shy, it’s his first time in the United States and he doesn’t know anybody yet. Then an Asian girl comes to greet him and says:
‘Hello, Andrei, my name is Lian Bai. Where are you from?’ She asks smiling while she reads his name on the card which is hanging around his neck.
‘I’m from Russia. And you? Where are you from?’
‘I’m from China. I would like to introduce you to some other students.’
‘Yes, of course, that would be great.’
Lian walks with Andrei towards a group of people who are drinking and eating next to a long table full of food, decorated with colourful flowers.
‘Isabella’, says Lian ‘this is Andrei. He is from Russia.’ Andrei shakes Isabella’s hand and asks her:
‘Where are you from?’
‘I’m from Italy and Pablo’ she says looking at a tall young man next to her ‘ is from Spain.’
‘How are you Pablo?’ Asks Andrei
‘Fine. This is a great party.’
‘Yes, it is’, says Andrei. ‘I would like to practice my Spanish with you Pablo. Is it possible?’
‘Okay. But I can’t practice my Russian with you Andrei. I don’t know how to speak Russian.’
‘It doesn’t matter. We can always speak English.’
Isabella then says to Andrei:
‘This is Hans from Germany and Sonja is from the Netherlands.’
‘Nice to meet you Andrei’ says Hans shaking his hand.
‘It’s a pleasure’, says Sonja shaking his hand too.
‘Nice to meet you too-’, replies Andrei with a big smile on his face.
Another Asian student walks towards the group and says hello to everybody.
‘Akio’, says Lian ‘is from Japan.’
Andrei asks him: ‘Are there many Japanese people studying at the University?’
‘I don’t think so. I think I’ll be the only one this year.’
‘There are a lot of Chinese people though’, adds Lian. ‘I think there are enough people for you to practice Chinese if you want Andrei.’
‘But I don’t speak Chinese. Only English, Spanish, German, Dutch and Japanese.’
‘Oh, my God! Well, you can certainly learn Chinese too.’
‘I’ll give it a try!’
All the students continue chatting, drinking and enjoying the evening.
